How to Overcome Procrastination

The topic of Achieving goals seems to be very popular at this time.

I have talked to several people lately that have said that the biggest reason they haven’t achieved their goals was procrastination. It seems to be the biggest thing that limits people and slows them down in their personal growth.

Therefore, I thought it would be a good topic to write about.

If any of you are not familiar with procrastination, I will explain what it is. Do you ever put a task or project off to another time because now is not a good time for this? And then you are putting it off again and again…

This is an example of procrastination. You don’t want to bother with something that is a burden for you. Or you might be fearful of this project or task. It could be any kind of fear, but most often it is a fear of failure.

Sounds familiar?

If you answered yes, congratulations! You are one step closer to overpowering your procrastination, just because you have admitted to yourself that there is an issue. As awareness is the number one key to resolving this issue.

So, how do you stop procrastinating? It is much simpler than you think.

First and foremost you need to decide why you want to complete this task/project. How are you going to benefit? What will you gain by going through with it? Who else might benefit from this?

Second, you need to break down your project into smaller action steps. Anytime you are overwhelmed by a task or a project, it is a sign that you need to break it down into smaller actions.

Oftentimes, just looking at the big goal, the big picture is overwhelming on its own. But once you break it down, action steps will be much more achievable and you will not be overwhelmed anymore.

Write down your action steps. Once you create your plan in writing, you will already feel less burdensome.

Third, you need to estimate the approximate completion time for each of your smaller actions. Write down the completion time for each of your actions next to each task.

Fourth, you need to actually plan when you are going to do each task, date and time included. In advance, think of anything that might interfere with your planned activities, and be proactive.

Fifth, start with the task that you are dreading the most. Once you accomplish your most unpleasant tasks, everything else will seem very easy to accomplish.

Sixth, let someone know that you are working on achieving this goal. This will ensure a certain degree of accountability on your behalf.

And finally, Find a way to celebrate each step accomplished. It could be something small, such as treating yourself to a specific meal or watching something you love, or meeting up with someone dear to you. And of course, you have to celebrate big when the whole thing has been achieved.

Now think, besides all of the benefits you have listed above, how will it make you feel once you achieve this project? If I had to guess, I would say totally empowered! 🙂

What are you waiting for? Start today. Kick procrastination in the butt and achieve anything you want!
